The Translation Process

Your original text is analyzed

Your original text is checked by a source language specialist for content, style and complexity to identify the domain or specialization involved, as well as any features of the text that warrant extra care. This initial analysis is rigorous and intelligent, and helps to make the best choice of the translation team and available reference materials.

A bilingual expert translates the text

The text is translated by a lead translator who must be a bilingual expert with a university degree in translation or at least 5 years translation experience, knowledge in the relevant subject matter, and certification through Skrivanek’s Translator Certification Program.

A proofreader checks the translation thoroughly

In the next step, the proofreader, who is an equally qualified linguist with the same experience and knowledge of subject matter, will check the translation thoroughly and then compare it to the source text for errors, style inconsistencies, accurate terminology, etc.

The translation is run through quality assurance

Afterwards, the quality assurance specialist, who is a native speaker of the target language will check for text inconsistencies, missing parts, spelling mistakes, etc., using QA tools to automatically double-check again.

Final adjustments and review complete your translation

Finally, the translator reviews the document without reference to the source text, to ensure that the overall quality of expression is polished. Any final edits are made, and then the client reviews the document.

FAQs

We offer translation, localization, and interpreting in 80 languages and over 200 language combinations.

Our headquarters is in the Czech Republic and we have many branches in Central and Eastern Europe. While we have deep roots in these regions, the quality of language services we provide is the same for every language combination we offer. We engage talent from our pool of 3,000 language specialists around the world. All linguists are chosen for specific jobs based on their mastery of the languages and subject matter involved, and our experienced Project Managers (PMs) ensure the highest quality no matter where you are or what languages your project requires.

Every Project Manager (PM) for the projects we handle around the world has access to the cutting-edge language software and other sophisticated resources that Skrivanek has invested in to process translations with superior results.

Definitely. Through our network of offices and partners Skrivanek is able to select from over 3,000 linguists and subject-matter specialists worldwide. This means that for each project we will assemble a team with the relevant background knowledge, skills, and experience. This ensures that all specialized texts are processed by linguists with subject matter expertise. In addition each project is assigned a Project Manager (PM) with extensive experience in the specific sector (medical, IT, legal, etc.) who supervises the entire project from receipt of initial estimate request to delivery and beyond.

A vital part of this process is liaison with the client on such matters as terminology, glossaries, company style guides, etc. The terminology you are concerned about including accurately in your translations will definitely be included – you have a role in that. With long-term clients we are able to develop cumulative resources such as digital translation memories and terminology databases that we use going forward to ensure consistency within every project, and from project to project. We also offer all potential clients the opportunity of a free, no-obligation trial translation in order to demonstrate our proficiency in their specific area of specialized terminology. Projects are not considered complete until the customer is satisfied, no matter how complex the subject matter.

Any format works. Our technical teams have years of experience finding effective solutions to client requests. We can also translate your text into a new format and work from that.

Our prices are guaranteed before we start your project because we quote on a per word basis according to word count along with the cost of whatever desktop publishing is required for your graphics content.Desktop publishing is the production of page designs using special DTP software that adjusts the visual display of images, graphs, etc. of the source file to accommodate the target language and communicate appropriately to the target market.

DTP software also enables the creation of new graphics and design work if needed, and you will be charged by the page for these services. Send us your source content and we’ll give you accurate pricing to translate it.

That depends on several factors, including word count, desktop publishing needs, and complexity of the translation. Delivery deadlines are agreed on before we start your project so there are no surprises at the end.

Yes, and they are the foundation of our success. In addition to long-term experience as translators or interpreters, our linguists are trained, tested, and when relevant they are certified (e.g. sworn translations). We hire translators who live and work in the target-language country and they translate into their mother tongue. They also must have qualifications and experience relevant to the subject matter of your job. In addition, they must have at least 5 years experience in the translation industry.

The rigorous selection process they go through demonstrates to us their ability able to produce texts with a very high level of linguistic competence and mastery of specialized terminiology.

The safety of your documents is absolutely our top priority. Our security management is designed and certified according to ISO 27001 standards. All suppliers involved in your project are required to sign a legally binding Confidentiality Agreement, and access to client/project information is restricted to a limited number of people within a high level security system.

Our network edge is protected by a firewall and our network iteself is protected by IEEE 802.1X port-based Network Access Control. Additional layers of data protection include the use of Across Language Server and optional PGP Encryption for communication with you.

The basic steps are as follows. The original text is analyzed. A bilingual expert then translates the text to the target language. A proofreader checks the translation thoroughly. Then the translation is run through Quality Assurance, which includes comparison of the translation with the original source text one last time. Any necessary final adjustments are made and the project is submitted for review by the client. Throughout the job you will have access to communication with your Project Manager about details and progress.

Sometimes the text you need to have translated is considered “non-editable.” This is text that is contained within charts, a scanned document, or a hand-written letter or report. These files are called non-editable because the text within them cannot be altered or processed in any way because they are not stored in a program designed for that, such as Word.

With non-editable files we will transfer the content to a new file that is editable so that CAT tools can be used for efficient translation. In this process the formatting will be lost, but if you require recreation of the original formatting our specialists can do that. Translation of non-editable files takes additional time and in some cases DTP services, but it is doable.
